Doctor: So, what brings you in today?
Patient: I have been suffering from a terrible pain in my ear.
Doctor: Oh, let me have a look at it. Hmm, It looks like you have acute otitis media. You'll need to take one pill of this medication (doctor writing it down) four times a day. Come back next week so I can check on you.
... End of appointment! ...
Did you ever go through such an experience where you are trying to explain your complaint to the physician but he seems in a hurry and rushes to disclose his diagnosis and prescribe the medication? or where the whole time he is reading your file and writing down notes while you are talking and barely making any eye contact with you? I did. Several times it really annoyed me and I made up my mind that if that happens again I'm going to tell the physician that I didn't like the way dealt with my case or how he didn't give me enough attention.
Well, the folks at CareerMedicine posted an article on how physicians can improve their relationship and communication with their patients. I found it rather interesting.
